How Are Bank Holidays Decided for Cooperative Banks in India?

Bank holidays in India are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The RBI categorizes these holidays into three types:

    • Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act – These are public holidays when banks remain closed for all transactions.
    • Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) – Banks and the RTGS system both remain closed.
    • Banks’ Closing of Accounts – April 1st every year, when banks close their annual books.

Cooperative banks, including District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs), State Cooperative Banks (StCBs), and Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), follow the same holiday schedule as prescribed by the RBI. Additionally, state-specific holidays may vary depending on the state government notifications and local festival observances.

Digital Banking Services Available on Holidays

While physical branches of cooperative banks remain closed on holidays, most digital banking services continue to operate 24/7, 365 days a year. The following services are available even on bank holidays:

    • UPI (Unified Payments Interface) – Instant fund transfers
    • IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) – 24×7 interbank transfers
    • NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer) – Available round the clock
    • RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) – Available 24×7 except on CTS holidays
    • Mobile Banking and Internet Banking – Account access, bill payments, and fund transfers
    • ATM Services – Cash withdrawals and balance inquiries

However, services that require in-person visits — such as cash deposits, locker access, demand draft issuance, document verification, and passbook updates — will not be available on bank holidays.
