Whether we apply for a home loan, car loan or a new credit card – our credit score determines everything. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to resolve such errors as soon as possible.
Recently, the Reserve Bank of India has emphasized the importance of not delaying the resolution process of credit-related errors and compensating the consumers accordingly. Back in early September 2026, the RBI levied a fine worth ₹34.91 lakh on three different credit information companies: TransUnion CIBIL, CRIF High Mark and Equifax. Below, we discuss the details of this RBI action and analyze how it may affect you.
Penalty Amount Distribution
When the RBI published its resolution, it highlighted that the penalty was distributed between the credit information companies based on the volume of their compliance shortcomings.
Since TransUnion CIBIL is the biggest credit reporting bureau in the country, it should not come as a surprise that this company was penalized the highest amount. Specifically, ₹26.82 lakh was allocated to this bureau, which comprises over 75% of the total penalty sum.

CRIF High Mark and Equifax were fined ₹6.89 lakh and ₹1.19 lakh, respectively. Although the size of the penalties may appear to be considerable, they have no significant impact on the business’s bottom line. However, the RBI’s key message conveys that the central bank will not allow any negligence on the part of credit reporting agencies while they handle customer complaints.
Why Were Credit Companies Penalized?
Remarkably, all three credit reporting agencies have been penalized for the same issue. In this case, the RBI has initiated an action against the companies for failing to compensate their customers for delayed resolution of their complaints.

As per the RBI’s compensation rules, if a consumer applies to a credit bureau and reports an error, both the bureau and the relevant business have one month to resolve this issue. If they fail to do so within the specified time frame, the consumer is entitled to an additional compensation of ₹100 per day. It is reported that during the course of its inspection, the RBI has found that TransUnion CIBIL, CRIF High Mark and Equifax did not make the required compensation to the consumers in a timely manner.
Essentially, these companies were penalized for being late in paying the penalty to the complaining consumers.
Consumer Takeaways
For the average consumer, the RBI’s action against the credit bureaus may turn out to be genuinely beneficial. When it comes to credit-related issues, it often appears that the system is working against you. This is especially evident when the credit report is inaccurate and the credit bureau does not want to amend the entries on the bureau’s website.

Such situations are particularly frustrating when the credit report error is tied to a closed account or a dispute with the business, which may prevent the consumer from obtaining a loan. In this situation, the RBI has the consumer’s complete support.
By making sure that the credit bureau compensates the consumer for every day of processing delay, the central bank ensures that the consumer is not forced to bear the consequences of the bureau’s mistakes.
Final Thoughts
The RBI’s recent action against the credit bureaus highlights that the central bank keeps a constant watch on the subject of consumer protection. If you are a consumer with a credit report, keep in mind that there are certain things you may do if you spot an error. When you report it to the credit bureau, you may ask for an amendment to the report and request an additional compensation if the issue is not resolved within a month.
